WALKING FREE FROM TRAUMA
1. What is Trauma?
Google defines trauma as:
A deeply distressing or disturbing experience
A physical injury
Integrated Listening Systems defines it as:
An emotional response to a terrible event (i.e. accident, rape, natural disaster, etc.)
Overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope
Causes feelings of helplessness
Diminishes both a sense of personal identity and a person’s ability to feel a full range of emotions and experiences
It can take one of two forms: major traumatic events or minor repetitive trauma over extended periods of time.
It has effects on the whole person – Body, Soul, and Spirit
It causes loss of safety and security – Flight, Fight, or Freeze reaction
2. Why Dredge Up the Past?
Doesn’t the Bible teach us to leave it behind us? (Philippians 3, 2 Corinthians 5:17)
God forgets it when He forgives us, so why shouldn’t we? (Matthew 5)
Our words have power; shouldn’t we just speak out what we want to be free of?
Isn’t all of this psychobabble just worldly wisdom that is unhelpful to a believer?
1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
James 5:16a (NASB) – “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed.”
3. How Do We Walk into Freedom?
It’s NOT a religious FORMULA! Pursuing vulnerable intimacy with Holy Spirit and using the tools He brings you, is what supernaturally empowers you into your healing journey.
