“According to God’s Word, there are spiritual genetics as well as physical genetics.” Chris Hayword

Romans 5:12

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.

Romans 5:17

For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much, more those who receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

1. What Are Generational Iniquities?

Exodus 20:4-5

You shall not make for yourself a carved image- any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them, for I the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting in the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me.

Exodus 20:6

But showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Exodus 34:6

And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,

Exodus 34:7

Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and fourth generation.

Iniquity – avon – evil, sin, guilt, blame, moral illness, perversion, crookedness.

Generational iniquity is not simply a tendency to sin in general, but an evil bent towards particular areas of sin and struggle.

“A child is not held responsible for a parent’s sin, but he or she may inherit a propensity to a bondage.” Chris Hayword

“Examples of sins if the fathers: Abandonment, Abuse, Addictions, Anger and rage, Fear, Pride, Rebellion, Sexual Sin, Unworthiness.” Restoring the Foundations

Our calling: to get free from generational iniquity, help others get free, and be a source of generational blessing to the generations after us.

2. How Do We Get Free from Generational Iniquity?

A. Repent of any open door in our own lives.

2 Corinthians 7:10a

For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted.

B. Forgive those from the generations before us.

Mark 11:25

And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.

C. Renounce any agreement or partnership with this iniquity.

2 Corinthians 4:2a

But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully.

D. Appropriate the Power of the Cross.

Isaiah 53:5

But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:6

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, everyone, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

E. Break the power of any generational iniquity by the power of the Blood of Jesus and the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.

Ephesians 6:17

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.

F. Declare that you will be a source of blessing to the next generation!

Exodus 20:6 NLT

But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey My commands.
