Discipleship: God Expectations

Disciple into the Presence!

 Ex. 33:8-10 (NIV) And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent.  As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses.  Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshipped, each at the entrance to their tent.

 Ex. 33:11 (NIV) The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.

 Ex. 24:12-13 (NLT) Then the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain. Stay there, and I will give you the tablets of stone on which I have inscribed the instructions and commands so you can teach the people.”  So, Moses and his assistant Joshua set out, and Moses climbed up the mountain of God.

 Ex. 24:18 (NLT) Then Moses disappeared into the cloud as he climbed higher up the mountain. He remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

Release My Expectations

 Luke 3:15 (NKJV) Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not,

 Mark 15:7 (ESV) And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.

  Choose God Expectations

 Psalm 62:5 (KJV) "My soul, wait thou only upon God; For my expectation is from him."

 Is. 30:18 (NKJV)

Therefore, the Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you;
And therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you.
For the Lord is a God of justice;
Blessed are all those who wait for Him.

Questions for discussion/reflection:

1.      Can you share (anonymously) an unmet discipleship expectation you have witnessed? (in yourself or someone else)

2.      How can we guard against taking up personal expectations?

3.      How can we grow in aligning our hearts with God expectations?

4.      How is having someone in your God time with you different from teaching them about God time?

5.      What might it look like for you to invite someone into “the tent” of your time with God?

6.      Does the idea of having someone in your God time make you uncomfortable?  Why?
