Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. That good thing, which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

2 Timothy 1:15

his you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

2 Timothy 1:16-17

The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me very zealously and found me.

2 Timothy 1:18

The Lord grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord in that Day – and you know very well how many ways he ministered to me at Ephesus.

2 Timothy 1:14 ESV

By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.

Deposit – something deposited to your account, something entrusted to you.

If you are a believer this morning, Father God has made a large deposit in your life!

2 Timothy 1:14 NIV

Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you – guard with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Guard – to protect from loss or damage.

Bible Commentary – The Holy Spirit enables us to keep from the robbers of the soul the deposit of His Word committed to us by God.

1. GUARD YOUR WORDS

2 Timothy 1:13 NKJV

Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.

Sound – whole, wholesome, healthy, true, accurate

Sound words – words that heal, words that bless, words of truth, words of Scripture, words of the Gospel.

Proverbs 13:3

He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

Proverbs 15:4

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Proverbs 18:7

a fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

Proverbs 18:21a

Death and life are in the power of the tongue.

Rick Renner – What you do with your tongue will determine your destiny.

Psalm 141:3

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth. Keep watch over the door of my lips.

 James 3:8

But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

2. GUARD YOUR THOUGHTS

2 Timothy 1:7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Sound Mind – from the root word sozo, save, heal, deliver, make whole.

Joe McIntyre – You can have a recreated spirit in the same body with an unrenewed mind.

Romans 12:2a

And do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 10:5

Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

3. GUARD YOUR HEART

Proverbs 4:23 NLT

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Matthew 12:34b NKJV

Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

Psalm 119:11

Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.

2 Timothy 1:13

Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.

Onesiphorus – One who brings help. One who is useful.

The Holy Spirit is here to refresh us.

2 Timothy 1:16

The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me,

Acts 3:19

Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.

The Holy Spirit is here to free us

2 Timothy 1:16b

for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.

The Holy Spirit is not here to condemn, but to convict us of sin so we can repent, turn to Jesus and get free.

The Holy Spirit is here to draw us to Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:17

But when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me.

Luke 15:4

What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which was lost until he finds it.
