WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?
John 14:15-16 – “If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
John 14:18 – “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”
1. THREE THINGS THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NOT
A. The Holy Spirit is not a ghost, as in haunted houses.
B. The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal influence or power.
C. The Holy Spirit is not an “it.”
2. WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?
A. The Holy Spirit is God.
Matthew 28:19 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Our God is one God. Our God is three Persons.
The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity.
B. The Holy Spirit is omnipresent.
Psalm 139:7 – “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?”
C. The Holy Spirit is omniscient.
1 Corinthians 2:10b – “For the Spirit searches [fathoms] all things, yes, the deep things of God.”
D. The Holy Spirit is omnipotent.
Job 33:4 – “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”
Luke 1:35 – “And the angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”
E. The Holy Spirit is eternal.
Hebrews 9:14 – “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
3. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TITLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?
A. He is the Spirit of Truth.
John 16:13a – “However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth.”
B. He is the Spirit of Holiness.
Romans 1:4 – “And declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of Holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.”
C. He is the Spirit of Life.
Romans 8:2 – “For the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”
D. He is the Spirit of Adoption.
Romans 8:15 – “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of Adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’”
Romans 8:16 – “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
E. He is the Spirit of Grace.
Hebrews 10:29 – “Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of Grace?”
F. He is the Spirit of Glory.
1 Peter 4:14a – “If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of Glory and of God rests upon you.”
4. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A DIVINE PERSON!
A. He is Holy Love. (1 John 4:8)
B. He has come to live inside of us. (John 14:17)
C. He desires to be a Divine Friend, Helper, and Comforter. (2 Corinthians 13:14)
