BLESSED ARE THE MEEK

Beatitudes – the be attitudes of those seeking to live in the Kingdom of God.

Matthew 5:5“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Blessed – Supremely blessed, happy, fortunate, to be congratulated, highly favored

Blessed are the meek.

How does the world define the word, “meek”?

How does the world describe a person who is meek?

“Few people think of meekness as a desirable attribute. Most assume that if a person is meek, he must be weak.” – Rick Renner

“The world sees meekness as one who is timid, shy, bashful, and introverted.” – Rick Renner

“In truth, meekness is one of the strongest attributes a person can have.” – Rick Renner

There are two very important people the Scriptures described as meek. Who are they?

Numbers 12:3 (KJV)“Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.”

Matthew 11:29b (KJV)“For I am meek and lowly in heart…”

What does it mean to be meek according to the Word of God?

Meekness is not weakness, but power under perfect control.

“Meekness is the attitude or demeanor of a person who is forbearing, patient, and slow to respond in anger. One who remains in control of himself or herself in the face of insults or injuries.” – Rick Renner

Meekness – pictures a strong-willed person who has learned to submit his will to a higher authority.

How do we respond to insult, injuries, and volatile situations?

1 Timothy 6:11“But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness [meekness].”

Meekness is the opposite of high-mindedness and a quarrelsome spirit. It is controlled strength.

What is the promise of this beatitude?

Matthew 5:5b“They shall inherit the earth.”

Inherit – Possess, enter into, especially used for the Promised Land

For us today – Entering into the Promise of our destiny.

“Entering into the Land of His Promises.” – Derek Prince

1. The meek know that God’s destiny is lived out in His power, not our own

Numbers 14:5“Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.”

Numbers 14:19a“Pardon the iniquity of this people I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy.”

2. The meek choose to walk in forgiveness and mercy

Walking in unforgiveness makes it difficult to walk out the fullness of our destiny.

Luke 23:34“Then Jesus said, ‘Father forgive them, for they do not know what they do.’”

3. The meek walk in self-control

Numbers 20:10b“Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water out of this rock?”

Numbers 20:11a“Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod.”

How do we grow in meekness?

1. Realize we need to grow in meekness.

Psalm 139:23a“Search me, O God, and know my heart.”

2. Repent of any attitudes that are contrary to Biblical meekness.

Pride, lack of self-control, unwillingness to forgive, correcting others harshly, trying to live in our own power.

3. Invite Jesus to live in us by the power of the Holy Spirit. Choose to walk in the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22a-23a (KJV)“The fruit of the Spirit is…meekness, temperance.”

4. By faith put on the fruit of meekness.

Colossians 3:12“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering.”

Lord, we repent of any attitude of pride, unforgiveness, lack of self-control, and thinking we can live life without Your Presence. Forgive us. Cleanse us. Come and live within us by Your Spirit. We put on the fruit of meekness and by faith choose to grow in this attribute for the Glory of God.
