10.29.23 | THE POWER OF THE WORD

2 Timothy 3:14-15 NLT

But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.

1. Let the Word Become a Treasure

Psalms 119:11 AMPS

Your word I have treasured and stored in my heart, That I may not sin against You.

John 6:63 NLT

“The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”

2. Let the Word Expose You

Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way.

Hebrews 4:12 NLT

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

3. Let the Word Put You Together

1 Timothy 3:17 MSG

Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.

1 Timothy 3:17 NLT

God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Questions for discussion/reflection:

  1. Do you regularly read your Bible?

  2. If yes, what does that time look like?  Do you just read the Bible, or do you also let the Bible read you?

  3. Do you think that you treasure the Word on the same level that you treasure Jesus?  If not, why?

  4. Have you ever felt exposed by the Word?  If yes, share how/why?

  5. What do you think your discipline of reading the Word should look like?
