9-8-24 | Called To Discipleship McLean Faw

Luke 5:1-2

So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the Word of Gd, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fisherman had gone from them and were washing their nets.

Luke 5:3-4

Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

Luke 5:5-6

But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless, at Your Word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.

Luke 5: 7-8

So, they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

Luke 5:9-10

For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.”

Luke 5:11

So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.

Matthew 28:19a

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.

“By investing in just one, they blessed many- and helped change the spiritual destiny of millions.” Dr. Koshy

WHO IS INVESTING IN ME? WHO AM I INVESTING IN?

1. DISCIPLES HAVE A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST

Luke 5:4

When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nests for a catch.”

Luke 5:8

When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

Romans 10:9 ESV

Because, if you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Philippians 3:10a

That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings

2. DISCIPLES ARE HUNGRY FOR THE WORD OF GOD

Luke 5:1

So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the Word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret.

1 Peter 2:2

As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.

Get a grip on the Word: Read the Word, Study the Word, Meditate on the Word, Memorize the Word, Do the Word.

Luke 5:5

But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled al night and caught nothing; nevertheless, at Your Word I will let down the net.”

John 8:31-32

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

S – Scripture

O – Observation

Luke 5:10b

And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.”

Whatever our vocation, our calling is to share Jesus and make disciples.

Luke 5:11

So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.

Matthew 16:24

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

Matthew 16:26

For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
